He managed the great Big Red Machine teams of the 1970's and led the Tigers to a 35-5 start in the 1984 season en route to their World Series win. He was a good manager, and humble about it too. At his Hall of Fame induction (which I recall differently from the linked article), he was introduced as a great manager. When it was his turn, Anderson said, "Great manager, huh?" And then he looked up at the sky. "I was fortunate enough that the front office blessed me with great players, and then I was smart enough to stay the hell out of their way."
Touche.
Terrific manager, good baseball man, entertaining, engaging guy.
Sparky, we'll miss you.
