Travel Baseball Teams for 8 year olds

I don't understand why these exist and why the kids simply can't play intramural ball.

Please explain in the comment section if you do. Thanks.

Me either. I tried to argue against it in my local LL, and the response was -- well every other LL does it. So our travel team is separated from the official LL.

I was thinking about this too, but mostly the general "traveling team" phenomena rather than specifically baseball.

I came to the conclusion that the small percentage of people that go from a traveling team in any sport (soccer, my specific thought) to a high level of college or pro is actually pretty small. But, large enough to convince people to spend money and time at a small percentage.

Sort of the same phenomena that keeps people in casinos.

Agreed -- it's part of the early specialization process. Got to get out there and be seen.

LOTS of money spent for very little return. NYTimes recently ran a series of articles on the reality of sports schollys as well as the time kids have to commit to keep'em.

As a AAU guy once said to me (paraphrasing) - "Imagine if the parents spent as much time on their kid's school work as they do yelling at me for putting them in a zone defense."
