Will the Temple Owls Go to Their First Bowl Game in a Long Time?

Sports Illustrated thinks so.

This is great news for Temple's head coach Al Golden, the entire staff and the players. Golden has turned around the atmosphere on North Broad Street in Philadelphia, and while the Owls are a far cry from pushing Penn State off the front of the sports pages in Philadelphia any time soon, they have improved.

This would be some story -- even in a town where the competition for attention from the sports reporters is fierce -- were it to happen.

It would be a terrific story and get the kind of play (or better) that the 27-0 St. Joe Hawks got in this town. For two months, Hawks jumped over the Phillies and Eagles above the page one sports fold. It was quite a sight to see. I just hope that if Temple has the good fortune to finally beat Penn State the headline will be "Temple explodes" rather than "Penn State implodes" but I think the second headline will carry that day, unfortunately.

I think that you're right on the headline, but if that were to happen, I'd make a quick run to the cemetery where my father is buried and check to see if he returned to our world. I recall the days of the close games at the Vet (when Anthony Anderson fumbled on a late fourth quarter drive after Casey Murphy punted beautifully all night, and Penn State kicked a late field goal to win 10-7 and the game at Franklin Field when Bobby Harris scored on a long run on one of the first games from scrimmage only to have the Owls lose by a point). Those games were so close, heartbreakers.

To me, that type of victory would be the biggest story of an era, not as big as a local team winning a major professional championship, but bigger than anything else.

Go Owls!
